Do Dead Artists Make Art?

From the Series Systems of Power – Self/forced Exclusion: An Interview with Teo Spiller

Video document Self/Forced Exclusion explores the issue which took place at the 5th Triennial of Contemporary Slovenian Art and which has remained entirely unnoticed by both the expert and general public. What we are dealing with here is the self/forced exclusion which occurred in the case of media artist Teo Spiller. Initially chosen among the entries for the final exhibition of the Triennial, where he should have exhibited in the second module together with 11 other artists, at the final stage suddenly Spiller was excluded from it. Besides the exclusion of the artist by the curator of the Triennial just before the opening of the main exhibition, what is far more worrisome is the fact that in Slovenia no one really wondered why Teo Spiller was missing. Can a space without self-critical reflection therefore be taken seriously? Finally, a further point of controversy is that the phenomenon of self/forced exclusion occurred at the very event the aim of which was to draw attention to the issues regarding production conditions in Slovenia.
